I first heard Caetano Velso's song "A Little More Blue" when I had the immense pleasure of singing for him in 2012. It's since held a significant spot in my own repertoire and through it, I've come to understand Caetano's experience of leaving Brazil, living abroad, and reflecting on his complex feelings during his period of exile. Not long ago, Joe De Sa came to me with a beautiful chorus for a song that needed to be finished. The song was called "Bye Bye" and when I heard it in its infancy, I assumed it was about saying good-bye to a lover. When we sat down to finish writing it, he told me that it was his good-bye song to Brazil. Connecting to that made the rest of the song practically write itself and pointed me in a new direction and focus on the theme "leaving Brazil" and brought me back, as always, to the era of music I love the most, the 70's.
